PROTOTYPE FUTURE - SHARING SOLUTIONS FOR TRANSFORMATIVE TEACHING
How can education prepare us for the future? What will future education look like? What topics, research and projects should education focus on? What logics and modes of scholarship and practice should students experience in higher education? What role(s) will students take in future education?
A prototype for the future must anticipate change while being open to new ideas and unplanned twists. On the one hand, transformative teaching makes it easier for students to deal with new situations and professional and societal demands for which science is crucial. On the other hand, transformative teaching helps to critically examine what should change in science, i.e. in education and research. Ideas prepared in design patterns explain practice from practice. Research on one's teaching (Scholarship of Teaching and Learning) develops practice from research. Ideas are the guarantee that patterns, structures and systems can always be adapted to new challenges.
How should teaching be designed so that students and graduates are able to actively shape social change and master the challenges of the present and the future? The focus is on the exchange of teaching-learning concepts, practical examples, student projects, research results and teaching development projects that can contribute to answering these questions.
All actors from universities and society are invited to discuss, develop and exchange ideas.
The TURN Conference is an annual exchange opportunity on teaching and learning and is sponsored by Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre.

Hi Markus! We have a few questions for you as a futurist and designer:
As FUTURE DESIGN EMBASSIES we have a strong belief in open sharing as well as open education and collaboration in intercultural contexts. Critical examination of how we work and what we put into the world is part of our vision of future design. We’d be very lucky to investigate with you what openness truly means in design practice and studies.
Markus Kreutzer is a Strategic Designer based in Berlin. His work focuses on designing strategic options that support organizations to navigate a complex and rapidly changing world. Usually, he works on issues around navigating uncertainty, discovering opportunities and enabling transformation processes. Markus has a master's degree in Futures Studies and has worked with organizations such as the Stockholm Resilience Centre, moovel lab, Domestic Data Streamers, HfG Schwäbisch Gmünd or the Emerging City Lab Addis Ababa.

As Director of Impact Measurement at IDEO California, USA Larry Corio will speak on measurement theories and approaches that fit for innovative, human-centered design contexts. Together we discuss on key capabilities for future design graduates and identify lead indicators.
At IDEO, Larry Corio leads IDEO and its client partners in better understanding the impact of their design efforts on each other and in the world. He is committed to reimagining the tools and principles that people use to define “successful design,” and is most inspired when supporting diverse and complex organizations to better articulate their vision for the future, the paths they might take to get there, and how they can responsibly and relevantly assess their progress.
Larry began his career as a high school educator in Los Angeles, California, which has inspired his relentless interest in the power of young people, community-driven innovation, and human-centered design. Since then, has worked as a researcher and program evaluator for the Institute of International Education, University of California system, and IDEO’s Learning practice. Larry has authored numerous studies focused on educator preparation programs and community schools, and has facilitated and delivered 10+ conference workshops and talks across the United States and Europe. He holds degrees in Leadership & Policy from Columbia University’s Teachers College, Secondary Education from Loyola Marymount University, and Journalism from Boston College.

Today we kick off our second workshop LIGHT + MODULARITY in collaboration with ERCO!
Holm Giessler, inhouse designer at ERCO, will give his presentation
on the modernist philosophy of ERCO and it’s company culture over the past 50 years at the Embassy at Quartier Nord.
»We are a leading international specialist in architectural lighting with LED technology. ERCO was founded in 1934 and has been family-run ever since. With around 550 employees, ERCO is one of the major employers in Lüdenscheid. In addition, there is a network of around 300 employees in the eleven sales subsidiaries in over 60 countries worldwide. Thus, with its characteristic combination of internationality and manageability, ERCO presents itself as a dynamic ‘micro-group’ with the short distances of a medium-sized company.«
Aside from the ERCO presentation we will give information about the project tasks, schedule and workshop information and of course there will be room for discussion.

Society is being constantly challenged by conflict (global/local), contradiction and an ever changing perspective by non-neutral roles of technology and organisations. We invite the Cumulus community, designers, artists, and educators to investigate how culture and creative industry can offer resilience, consolation, and innovation models on human scale.
With a legacy of conflict, the city of Antwerp represents an economic and cultural hive of activity. Concepts from avant-garde to conformism fashion, product design and new media have flourished in Antwerp.
Aligned with the vision of Cumulus Association, and revigorated with the notion that new movements can be shaped in grassroots settings, the aim of the Conference is to map principles research and education in design and highlight novel directions.
The conference is actively looking for new insights and critical reflections on the value of Connectivity and Creativity in times of Conflict, reflected in these conference tracks:
– Nature positive/Design for Transformation
– Digital futures/Hybrid reality
– Handle with care/Inclusivity
– Method/Art

Today Prof. Martin Middelhauve visits us for a COFFEE + DIALOGUE.
As co-founder of IDEM (International Design Education Meeting) he has profound and multi-layered experience in international work contexts. Thus, he is a fantastic guest to discuss CULTURAL EXCHANGE with us. In relation to problems of the 21st century such as racism, antisemitism and dealing with otherness, the concept of cultural exchange that has been established in Western Modernism is reflected.
How do we want to face these problems through and with design research and practice in the future?
Martin Middelhauve is Professor at the University of Applied Science and Arts, Dortmund. He is teaching spatial design, scenography and style studies.
His work includes scenography, corporate design, product and interior design and also music.

Think ahead. Question. Design.
What connects values with sustainability and ethics with flight altitude? The possible futures are countless. As a VDID partner of the New European Bauhaus, the project group Ethics & Values invites you to discuss paths to a desirable future and to set signposts for society: as designers and those interested in future issues. Based on future living, consumption and production scenarios, perspectives for necessary radical socio-economic and political paradigm shifts will be debated: To achieve sustainable futures, goal formulations are needed that go beyond the mundane. The goal should be new attitudes - these are unlikely to emerge if only the old is changed. Instead of threatening dystopias, utopias need to be developed. These serve as a tool to sensitize designers, potential clients, politicians, etc. to the construction of new value horizons. How can a utopian goal make it possible to design a new understanding of sufficiency in life and economy? Which strategies and role models are necessary to initiate cultural change, social and economic transformations and to transfer them into "doing"? What role should design play in this? On Saturday, November 12, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., the utopias of the VDID project group will be presented and then corresponding design potentials will be discussed in a panel discussion with audience participation and illustrated in sketchnotes.

Especially now, in times of overlapping crises, we need ideas about the future that open up new perspectives, and people who develop concrete solutions for current challenges. What can the creative sector contribute to turn desirable futures into reality?
On 10 November, experts of the creative sector, from science and practice, will present their ideas at our conference from 10:00 – 12:40 PM. The event takes place digitally and will be livestreamed.
How can companies become more sustainable? What new education forms are required to prepare our society for the challenges of tomorrow? How can entrepreneurial ideals be communicated authentically? These and other questions will be addressed by numerous inspiring guests in various discussion formats.
Afterwards: Workshop „Future methods for the work context“:
Starting at 12:55 PM, we offer a digital one-hour workshop in German with Katrina Günther (Futures Probes, SRH University of Applied Sciences), presenting innovative future methods that can be integrated into your everyday work. Would you like to take part? Then tick the appropriate box below in the general registration for the congress.
The conference takes place digitally and will be livestreamed online in English and German. The event will be translated into German sign language.

Can good design increase the resilience of companies and entire economic sectors to crises? Are strong brands and companies with high design standards and adaptable products more resilient? The leitmotif "recreate. transform. be resilient" of the GDC Summit (formerly the German Brand and Design Congress) gets to the bottom of these questions.
Speakers from different disciplines will discuss what influence good design can have on long-term success and what the most important factors for resilience are. At the congress, experts from research and science will discuss with successful brand managers, creative people from agencies - and of course with the congress participants from a wide range of industries and professional fields.

The first workshop Light and Liminality of the "EMBASSIES FOR DESIGN PERSPECTIVES" will be conducted by Folkwang ambassadors Celina Kroder and Alina Rogge in Rochester at the Vignelli Center for Design Studies in November 7th – 11th 2022.
The workshop will take place under the direction of Prof. Marion Digel from Folkwang University of the Arts and Josh Owen from RIT.
Participants will be up to 6 Industrial Design master students at RIT and up to 4 master students from Folkwang. The German Students will work parallel to the workshop in Rochester and have access to the major discussions and presentations via Zoom.
The conceptual and practical design workshop deals with the question of the relevance of the ideas of modernism for the challenges of the 21st century reflecting the ethos of Massimo and Lella Vignelli as American/Italian Designers and Ingo Maurer as a German Designer and their ideas about good design.
The goal of the workshop is that Master students reflect these ideas of the 20th century in regard to their own involvement with today’s challenges, like the energy crisis (a real threat in Europe) or global warming (a real threat in the world) and transfer these into a product.
They should also ask the questions: “How would the Vignellis and Ingo Maurer have tackled these challenges with design today?” They are asked to exemplify through their design of a lighting device, if and how those ideas of the great designers of the 20th century are still useful today.

For the second time in the 30-year history of Cumulus, the conference comes to North America. Cumulus Conference 2022 will explore what role designers play in fostering Adaptation through a wide range of approaches, methods, visions, and experiments that draw on Adaptation to reduce vulnerabilities and foster resilience for any community, big or small.
CCS has partnered with the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD) to bring a wider perspective from across the North American sector. Detroit, a UNESCO City of Design, is an ideal location for exploring art and design-led research in a sustainably minded and socially aware community of practice.
The complex consequences of climate change have pushed the need for community resilient strategies to thrive in the face of change. Cumulus Detroit invites you to discuss the theme focused on adapting to survive and grow, no matter what kinds of chronic stresses and acute shocks we will experience.

INVITATION
to the opening ceremony of the Future Design Embassy at the Folkwang University of the Arts!
The Folkwang University of the Arts(NRW Germany) and the Vignelli Center for Design Studies at RIT (NY USA) open EMBASSIES FOR DESIGN PERSPECTIVES as places for transfer, research, experimentation and exchange of diverse positions. Both Universities select student ambassadors who are going to visit congresses and lead design workshops in each other‘s countries on the topic "Backtracking Modern Times. Are the ideas of Modernism sufficient to solve 21st Century problems?“
In doing so, the student ambassadors acquire skills for future design activities in an international context. They publish their results in a travel logbook, in open access and print media, as well as expand the network of EMBASSIES FOR DESIGN PERSPECTIVES.
The Folkwang Future Design Embassy consists of Prof. Marion Digel, the initiator and director of the project FUTURE DESIGN PERSPECTIVES, designer and lecturer at the Industrial Design faculty, Sebastian Goldschmidtböing and Art- and Design Studies Master Student Karen Druebert. Industrial Design Master student Celina Kroder and Art- and Design Studies Master student Alina Rogge are the first Folkwang Ambassadors.
Each campus has an embassy office, where the embassy team can properly prepare the workshops, revise the results, research and document their activities and receive guests interested in the program for coffee and exchange.
The entire Folkwang Embassy Team is pleased to invite you to the grand opening of the Folkwang Future Design Embassy on October 19th, 15.00 at Quartier Nord, Room 1.28.
We would be happy to see you there!
